Irish Cancer Society urges people to be "sun-smart"

11/06/2005 - 10:15:30
Irish people are exposing themselves to too much sun. The Irish Cancer Society is urging people to be sun-smart and avoid the possibility of skin cancer.

Terry Slevin, director of the Cancer Council of Western Australia, says 15 minutes of exposure is more than enough.

“During the summer, it’s obviously the highest UVA period of the year in Ireland and we also understand that there is a need for a good level of vitamin D,“ he said.

“To get that vitamin D in the Irish summer people need 15 minutes of sun exposure to the face and hands mid-morning or mid afternoon,” said Mr Slevin.

For most healthy, pale skinned people that is enough to get the vitamin D you need.
