Scorsese scores with stunning Hughes biography
10/06/2005 - 19:23:31No luck at the Oscars for Martin Scorsese, but The Aviators (BuenaVista) is nevertheless a thrilling film, now available on an excellent double disc title.
Leonardo DiCaprio gives an absorbing performance as legendary figure Howard Hughes, the playboy/test pilot/film producer whose transition from boy wonder to successful pioneer masks a troubled genius whose life would take a dramatic lurch later on.
Cate Blanchett turns into an equally fine performance as Katharine Hepburn, but this is a beautifully directed film, vividly recreating an extraordinary era. Why Scorsese was overlooked yet again is nothing short of amazing.
An abundance of extras includes documentaries and featurettes on hair and make up, as well as talks with Scorsese and DiCaprio.
