EC suing Ireland for failure to protect air passengers
09/06/2005 - 13:09:12The European Commission has begun legal action against the Irish Government because of its failure to protect air passengers.
The Commission is trying to force the Government to appoint an enforcement body to give passengers protection and compensation in the event of flight cancellation, long delays or lost baggage.
Dublin MEP Proinsias De Rossa says the Government is one of just three in the EU fighting this legislation: “The Irish Government, like a lot of others, and indeed airlines as well, want an open market, but they are not prepared to give guarantees to customers that they will transport them when they buy a ticket from them and the regulation is intended to rectify that.”
