Eight die in building collapse
The bodies of three children, three women and a man have been pulled from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria.
The body of a seven-year-old boy was found shortly after the building collapsed yesterday.
Ten people were believed to be trapped under piles of concrete and metal in the ruined block, which collapsed yesterday onto the wall of a school where at least 20 women were waiting to collect students who were finishing exams.
Police said 14 of 20 people injured were still being treated in hospital.
A police official said the building’s owner had added three floors to the apartment building in violation of the law, which he said caused the collapse.
The collapse occurred in one of Alexandria’s most crowded districts, known as al-Raml Station.
Building collapses are common in Egypt, often caused by shoddy construction or unauthorised building of extra floors.
Critics blame lax government control and supervision for the continued practice.
