United make Korea move

07/06/2005 - 07:08:54
PSV Eindhoven will allow midfielder Ji-Sung Park to speak to Manchester United after confirming the Premiership club had made an approach.

PSV do not want to lose the services of the 24-year-old South Korea international but admit they cannot stop Park moving if he wants to.

Club spokesman Pedro Salazer-Hewitt told the Daily Mail: “The only person who will decide his future is Park.

“We want to keep him, as we want to keep all our best players, but we know the system and we know that if another club make an official offer it’s a possibility we will lose the player. United have officially asked about Park and the player has been informed.”

United have already made one move in the transfer market since the season ended by agreeing terms with Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

The 34-year-old will finalise his move to Old Trafford from Fulham after returning from international duty with Holland this week.

He will become the latest in a long line of goalkeepers to have been tried by Sir Alex Ferguson since losing the services of Peter Schmeichel in 1999.

The likes of Raimond van der Gouw, Massimo Taibi, Fabien Barthez, Ricardo, Roy Carroll and Tim Howard have failed to hold down a place in the side but van der Sar believes he will make a success of the move.

“They’ve tried a lot of keepers and I will perform the best that I can,” vowed the 6ft 5in Dutchman. “I’ll do my best to get halfway to what Peter achieved at Old Trafford.

“The next few years will be great for me and I hope to bring United back to where they belong.”

United finished a distant third in the Premiership behind Chelsea last season but van der Sar is hopeful the gap can be closed with a few more additions over the summer.

“Maybe, with a couple more adjustments in the team, we will be fully ready for them (Chelsea).”
