MEP salaries could be cut in EU fixed salary plans
07/06/2005 - 16:49:36Certain members of the European parliament could face a salary cut under plans to fix the wages of all members of the EU parliament.
Irish MEP’s now earn €73,000-€91,000 a year, but the EU states have agreed to fix salaries at €84,000.
This would remove disparities in pay, which see Italian MEPs take in about €12,000 a month while Eastern European colleagues pocket just about €800.
The move will have to be approved by the European Parliament, but it is likely to be voted through in an effort to boost its public image.
The deal will also include measures to monitor MEP's expenses.
