Derby crowd tops 100,000

05/06/2005 - 12:13:24
A crowd estimated by the police at 100,000 watched yesterday’s Vodafone Derby.

The Grandstand and Queen’s Stand were long-since sold out, and early rain failed to deter the usual large crowd from heading up on to The Hill.

Many were still enjoying the entertainment hours after the end of racing.

Epsom managing director Stephen Wallis said: “We had a fabulous winner of the Vodafone Derby in Motivator and a terrific atmosphere from a crowd that we estimate has topped 100,000.”

On-course totepool turnover topped £1m (€1.5m) on the day at £1,020,751 (€1.51m), compared with £1,036,101 (€1.54m) last year.
