European Parliament overturns commission ban on misleading nutritional claims
05/06/2005 - 16:38:51Foods high in salt, sugar and fat could still be allowed a healthy label following a decision made in the European Parliament.
The Parliament has voted to throw out a European Commission provision to fight obesity, which included a ban on misleading nutritional claims on food.
Green Party food spokesperson Mary White has hit out at the move, saying: “We want consumers to have full confidence in their labelling.
“We want labelling to be very clear and visible to the human eye. We don’t want to have to reach into our bags for magnifying glasses to try and see minuscule writing on our food products, and we think (this) is a very backwards step and very poor for consumers.”
