Waterford United wish Murphy well
Republic of Ireland Under 21 striker Daryl Murphy completed his move to Sunderland from Waterford United in a £100,000 (€145,000) deal yesterday to end weeks of speculation about the 22-year-old’s future.
Murphy said: “I'm absolutely delighted to come to a club as big as Sunderland. There's a fantastic fanbase here, they love their football and to play in front of such a passionate crowd will be fantastic.”
Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy said: “He's a target man - a big powerful striker and I'm looking forward to seeing him here. We believe he has a bright future.”
His former boss at Waterford United Alan Reynolds held back the disappointment to wish his former player the best of luck in England.
“Disappointment to lose him doesn't come into it. It's a fantastic chance for Daryl and one he simply had to take. He knows he has to work hard but he has the right attitude for it,” he said.
“Sunderland saw something in him because he was scoring lots of goals off very little service for us and that will improve at Sunderland.”
