Harte returns for the Republic
Ian Harte returned from a 13-month international exile to win his 59th cap for the Republic of Ireland as manager Brian Kerr turned to the left-back to help solve his defensive problems.
Without recognised right-backs Stephen Carr through suspension and Steve Finnan because of a thigh injury, Kerr switched John O’Shea across from the left, allowing Harte to make his first appearance since April 30 last year.
With Roy Keane also serving a one-match ban, the experience of Matt Holland prevailed over Graham Kavanagh in the centre of midfield, while Andy Reid added an attacking edge on the right wing.
Israel coach Avraham Grant gave Avi Yehiel his debut at right wing-back as the visitors primarily deployed a five-man backline to counter Ireland’s forward line.
