Gardaí mount nationwide crackdown on road accidents

04/06/2005 - 08:32:36
Gardaí are mounting nationwide checkpoints as they try to reduce road accidents over the bank holiday weekend.

The clampdown is focussing on drink-driving, speeding, and non-wearing of seatbelts.

Gardaí are asking for public help in their latest road safety campaign.

They want people to report suspected drink-drivers. They will also be monitoring people leaving pubs and restaurants.

Gardaí will be out in force in patrol cars as well as un-marked vehicles.

The number of accidents is usually worst on bank holiday weekends. During the June bank holiday last year, five people died and 94 were injured on our roads.
