Teachers, students slam moves to deport Leaving Cert student

03/06/2005 - 07:31:14
Teachers and students have condemned the Gardaí's moves to deport a Nigerian man who is due to sit his Leaving Cert in Dublin next week.

Tunde Omoniyi has been ordered to report to the Garda National Immigration Bureau next Tuesday to arrange for his deportation.

The 20-year-old begins his Leaving Cert the following day and teachers and students have condemned the timing of the garda move as needlessly insensitive.

Mr Omoniyi is a classmate of Olukunle Elukanlo, the Nigerian Leaving Cert student who was deported amid huge controversy earlier this year.

Mr Elukanlo was eventually brought back to Ireland when Justice Minister Michael McDowell overturned his deportation following a campaign by his fellow students.
