Extension of EU fund provides boost to peace process
03/06/2005 - 13:01:11The North’s peace process is to receive a boost through the two-year extension of an EU fund aimed at economic renewal and social integration.
This will bring an extra €144m for various projects targeted at areas worst hit by the Troubles.
The Peace II programme aims to boost reconciliation between the Catholic and Protestant communities and improve local regeneration and cross-border cooperation.
Unionists have complained that their community has not received its share in the past, but the programme’s director says they hope to receive more applications from Protestant areas as the process has been greatly simplified.
More than 5,300 projects have been funded to date.
