Spencer ban quashed
Jamie Spencer has had a two-day riding ban quashed on appeal at the Jockey Club today.
Spencer was enjoying his second successful appeal in a week after getting a four-day ban reduced to three last Thursday – a move which allowed him to ride at Epsom tomorrow.
Today’s hearing considered the decision of the Newmarket stewards to find Spencer guilty of careless riding on the unplaced Red Emerald during the British Legion Punters Novice Stakes on May 5.
The disciplinary panel heard evidence from Spencer and Neil Chalmers, the rider of third-placed Dingaan as well as viewing recordings of the race.
They found that any interference was accidental and cleared Spencer of any wrongdoing.
Richard Brooks, of Withy King Solicitors, who represented Spencer, said: “Jamie is obviously delighted with the result, and is very pleased to have won two appeals in a week. We both had a sense of déjà vu as we arrived this morning!
“Hopefully Jamie will not have to return to Shaftesbury Avenue for some time, but if any ban is unjustified it should always be appealed.
“Sometimes a jockey might be tempted to let it go, but that can be dangerous because you never know when even a short ban might come back to haunt you under the totting-up provisions.”
