Tribunals could cost close to €1bn
02/06/2005 - 16:14:05A powerful Dáil committee is warning that the current batch of tribunals could end up costing the taxpayer close to €1bn.
In its second interim report, the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee also says more people should be prosecuted in the courts for tax evasion to demonstrate that there is a real will to tackle the problem.
The report calls for a better method of fine collection and says there should be a greater cooperation in this area between the gardaí the ports and the revenue commissioners.
The commission has said that only one euro in every three is collected in such fines.
