Var still Ascot-bound
Var remains on course for a sprint double-header at Royal Ascot at York following his comeback run when out of the money in the Temple Stakes at Sandown last night.
Frankie Dettori told Clive Brittain the former American-based speedster, winner of last season’s Prix de l’Abbaye, had blown up during the Group Two contest, in which he eventually finished eighth.
The Newmarket trainer observed: “As I suspected before the race he wasn’t quite razor sharp and on a track as stiff as Sandown there was always a good chance he would get found out.
“Frankie told me he felt the horse blow up a furlong and a half out and I’m sure he’ll come on a ton for it.
“The plan is to go for the King’s Stand Stakes next and then follow up in the Golden Jubilee on the Saturday. I’m sure his run will help to put him spot on.”
