Gardaí mount drink-drive crackdown
Gardaí are to begin a major nationwide crackdown on drink driving tonight.
Undercover and uniformed officers will monitor pubs and clubs across the country and those leaving them over the next week, including the Bank Holiday weekend.
A spokesman for the force said the operation will commence at 7pm this evening and terminate on June 7.
“The main emphasis of the operation will be the enforcement of drink driving legislation,” he said.
“During each night of the operation, gardaí will monitor licensed premises and individuals leaving from them, in every garda division.
“Checkpoints will be mounted and marked and unmarked patrol cars will be used to monitor driving behaviour.”
The spokesman said the majority of motorists do not drink and drive, however there is a sizeable minority who continue to break the law and these drivers will be the focus of concentrated garda enforcement.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report cases of suspected drink driving to the Gardaí,” he said.
“During the June Bank Holiday last year five people died and 94 were injured on Irish roads.
“This operation is part of the Garda Siochana’s ongoing efforts to alter driver behaviour.”
The spokesman added: “Motorists are reminded: never drink and drive, keep within the speed limits and wear seatbelts.”
