Bomb at Muslim shrine near Pakistani capital

27/05/2005 - 07:55:05
A bomb exploded today at a Muslim shrine near Pakistan’s capital, wounding dozens of people and causing some fatalities, police said.

Hundreds of Shiite Muslims were gathered at the Bari Imam shrine on the outskirts of Islamabad when the blast occurred.

“There are some dead but we don’t know how many,” said police officer Mohammed Sadique.
He said dozens of people were hurt and some had been shifted to hospital.

Sadique said the bomb had gone off inside the shrine, where many Muslims have been gathering this week for a five-day festival, ending today.

The shrine is located about half a mile from the official residence of Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

In February, gunmen opened fire on mourners returning from a funeral near the shrine, sparking a shootout that killed three people and injured several others.

The violence was believed linked to a feud between two families over control of the shrine.
