Delegates gather for Labour conference

27/05/2005 - 15:34:05
Labour delegates are gathering in Tralee this evening for the party's 61st National Conference.

Amongst those addressing the Conference will be Frank McBrearty who is central to the Morris Tribunal which is investigating wrongdoing by certain gardaí in Donegal.

However, the main talking point of the Conference will be a debate and subsequent vote on entering a pre-election pact with Fine Gael.

Delegates will vote tomorrow whether to accept a pre-election pact with Fine Gael to challenge the Government.

A vote in favour will give Labour almost two years to form a strategy with Fine Gael, however a number of Labour members are opposed to an election pact.

They suggest that Labour should go it alone and weigh up its options with other parties once the seats are declared at the next election.

It is believed that Labour will vote for the pact, however the result could cause some division within the parties ranks.
