Lucas defends Star Wars technology

Legendary director George Lucas has hit out at critics who label his Star Wars films as just a succession of special effects with no substance.

Lucas, whose latest Star Wars prequel Episode III - Revenge of the Sith has broken box-office records worldwide, insists that film has always been about utilising state-of-the-art effects.

He says: "All art is technology. There's the first caveman who picked up a rock and started drawing
on a wall and then the next one said: 'Hey, I know how to do this even better. We crush the rock up, and we put water in it, and then we use it as paint,'

"No matter what art form you're in, a thing like the proscenium arch changes the art form, and makes it easier for people to create things, and film is the most technological of all the art forms and has been right from the very beginning."
