Gordon Strachan has been confirmed as Martin O’Neill’s replacement as Celtic manager.

O’Neill will step down to look after his wife Geraldine, who is fighting lymphoma cancer, with former Southampton and Coventry manager Strachan taking over.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: “I can confirm we are delighted that Gordon has accepted the manager’s position at Celtic and I think he will do very well for the club.”

O’Neill added: “We now have a new manager in place and he will do wonderfully well.

“He will take over and will inherit some really good footballers and one or two things that are sometimes not so good.”
