Taoiseach rejects criticism of Govt’s record on crime
25/05/2005 - 12:15:20The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has rejected claims that the Government is losing its battle on crime.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny claimed in the Dáil this morning that crime was out of control in certain areas of the country.
However, Mr Ahern rejected this, saying the rate of recorded crime was falling despite an increase in the population in recent years.
Yesterday, Fine Gael deputy leader Richard Bruton said government figures showed that “headline” crimes in Dublin had increased by 23% between 2000 and 2004, with assaults almost trebling during the five-year period.
