1916 surrender order to be auctioned in Dublin today
25/05/2005 - 07:38:36A surrender order written by Padraig Pearse in the wake of the 1916 Rising is expected to sell for tens of thousands of euros at auction in Dublin today.
The hand-written document was penned at Arbour Hill Prison on April 30, 1916, three days before Pearse's execution by firing squad.
It is one of a number of surrender orders written by the rebel leader instructing republican volunteers throughout Dublin to lay down their arms.
The document has been valued at between €50,000 and €80,000.
It is unclear if the State will be among the bidders as it already owns other surrender orders written by Pearse following his capture.
