Witherspoon wasted in dull drama
20/05/2005 - 18:48:07Reese Weatherspoon is rather lost in Vanity Fair (Universal), a rather indifferent reworking of Thackeray’s splendid novel about a woman (Becky Sharp) adept in the art of playing men at their own game in 19th century Britain.
Mira Nair’s direction fails to handle the poor adaptation, while a strong cast is left struggling to fill the gaps.
Jim Broadbent, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Gabriel Byrne must have wished they were elsewhere.
DVD extras include an audio commentary, deleted scenes and several featurettes.
