IBEC warns of legal implications of internet abuse at work

20/05/2005 - 17:45:09
Misuse of the internet at work could start to cause serious legal problems for Irish employers.

According to the business group IBEC, international studies show up to 30% of web surfing isn't business-related, and that 70% of all internet porn browsing occurs on company work time.

They say there's no reason to suggest the figures wouldn't be similar here.

IBEC's Tony Donoghue said that employers need to be aware that they are legally responsible if workers download porn or music at work.

“Companies have a duty of care to their employees. They are what we call vicariously liable, they are liable for the action of all staff and its impact on employees,” Mr Donoghue explained.

“If somebody is sent a pornographic image by email for example and takes offence from that, the employer is technically liable for that.” he said.
