Keeping players key to Redknapp staying

19/05/2005 - 08:50:55
Southampton boss Harry Redknapp says his decision on whether to stay at St Mary’s rests on whether the club are prepared to keep their key players.

Redknapp held talks with chairman Rupert Lowe yesterday and looks set to stay at the south-coast outfit after assurances on the direction the club is taking.

Keeping strike-partners Peter Crouch and Kevin Phillips is seen as essential to getting back into the top flight following relegation from the Barclays Premiership last weekend.

Redknapp, who was encouraged by initial discussions, said: “I sat down with the chairman and went through the squad looking at next season. What is important is that we try to keep hold of our best players.

“You have got to keep them and give us a chance of getting up, all I wanted was confirmation from the chairman that we will look to keep the best players here and add one or two free transfers or whatever we can find.”

In particular, Crouch has impressed this season, earning the striker a call-up into the England side.
