Vieira pledges future to Gunners

18/05/2005 - 18:30:06
Patrick Vieira pledged his future to Arsenal as he insisted that this summer would not be dominated by another transfer saga linking him with Real Madrid.

Vieira came close to joining Real last summer only to change his mind at the last minute, when even Arsene Wenger was expecting him to leave.

However, he insists that chapter is now closed as he believes that he can fulfil his ambitions at Highbury – including winning the Champions League.

Asked if he could say for certain that he will be at Highbury next season, Vieira maintained: “Yes, of course.

“Why? Firstly, because I have two years left on my contract and, secondly, because I really believe that we are going to achieve what we can do as a team.

“I believe the team can do much better due to the way we play and the quality of the young players coming through.

“The next three or four years will be really important for the club and I want to be part of it.”

Despite having won the title three times at Highbury, Vieira has yet to reach even the Champions League semi-finals with the club.

However, when asked if he still believes Arsenal can conquer Europe, he maintained: “Of course.

“What is really frustrating is that we have got really close. Every year, we just miss a little bit of something to go to the next step.

“Hopefully, one day that will come. Every year, our concentration and our motivation to do well is there.

“We get really focused and we want to do well, but sometimes we just don’t perform on the day and that’s our big problem.”
