PSNI closer to charges in McCartney investigation
The family of murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney has claimed the PSNI is moving closer to bringing charges in relation to the case.
The 33-year-old father-of-two was beaten and stabbed to death outside a pub in the city on January 30, allegedly by senior republicans.
Several arrests have been made, but nobody has been charged with any offence, prompting the McCartney family to consider civil action against the alleged killers.
However, speaking after a meeting with US envoy Mitchell Reiss today, the dead man's sister, Paula, said the police had informed her that they were "closer to a breakthrough" in their investigation.
She said the police appeared more confident in their language and had told the family that they had received significant new information.
Ms McCartney said witnesses were being more co-operative and the police were hoping to make more arrests "sooner rather than later".
