The Taoiseach told the Dáil today the Moriarty Tribunal will have cost the taxpayer nearly €20m by the end of the year.

The inquiry was set up in 1997 to investigate alleged payments from businessmen to Michael Lowry and Charlie Haughey.

The Taoiseach revealed the vast majority of the money has been spent on lawyer's fees. "The total costs incurred by my department since 1997 to April 30, 2005 is €19,619,388," Mr Ahern said.

"This includes fees paid to counsel of the Tribunal and administration costs incurred to date since the establishment of the Tribunal. The total payment made to the legal team is €14,660,792."
