Equality Authority reports increase in ageism complaints
16/05/2005 - 07:26:30The Equality Authority has reported an increasing number of calls from older people who believe they are being discriminated against because of their age.
The authority is due to launch a Say No to Ageism campaign this morning in the hope of promoting new practices that do not exclude older people.
Speaking ahead of the launch, spokesman Niall Crowley said employers and service-providers were the subject of most complaints.
"Ageism is particularly prevalent in terms of workplace practices, in terms of difficulties in accessing jobs, difficulties in accessing promotion and in relation to dismissal," he said.
"It is also evident in service-provision where age limits are used to exclude older people or where services to older people are segregated from the mainstream services."
