Witness heads Mile entries

29/04/2005 - 11:49:47
Record-breaking Hong Kong racehorse Silent Witness is set to step up in trip for the Champions Mile on May 14, where his rivals may include Mark Johnson’s Attraction.

Silent Witness achieved the remarkable feat of 17 straight victories when winning last weekend and his presence adds a considerable amount of sparkle to a race which is also the first leg of the inaugural Asian Mile Challenge.

However, the six-year-old is known as a sprinter and was tackling seven furlongs for the first time in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup earlier this month.

Attraction, who memorably achieved the English and Irish 1000 Guineas double, is yet to run as a four-year-old but is one of five overseas raiders entered for the Sha Tin contest.

Fellow British runner Brunel, recently second in the Sandown Mile, is also in the line-up along with Japanese horse of the year Cosmo Bulk.

Another Japanese representative Meiner Solomon and the Australian Delzao complete the overseas party, while the home team looks strong and includes the classy Bullish Luck.

Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s executive director of racing, said: “It is terrific that we have attracted such strong competition both from within Asia and also through Europe.

“Of course, Silent Witness tackling a mile for the first time will stimulate global interest and that can only be good news for this exciting new initiative.”
