BUPA ‘to leave market if forced to subsidise rival VHI’

BUPA Ireland, the country’s second largest health insurer, has reportedly threatened to exit the market if it is forced to subsidise the VHI, its state-owned rival.

Reports this morning said the Health Insurance Authority was set to recommend that the Government force BUPA to make regular payments to the VHI.

The authority reportedly believes the move is warranted because of the older and less profitable age profile of the state company’s members.

However, this morning’s reports said BUPA believed that subsidising the VHI would cause it to lose millions of euro annually and force it to leave the market.
