Israeli outlines opposition to Russian arms sales

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told the visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin today that Israel opposes Russian plans to sell armoured troops carriers to the Palestinians.

Reports said Sharon conveyed the message in an early-morning meeting with Putin, who arrived in Israel late yesterday for the first-ever visit by a Russian or Soviet leader.

Israeli media quoted government officials as saying Israel wants Palestinian security forces to do a better job of controlling armed militants before receiving sophisticated military equipment.

During Putin’s visit, Israeli officials are expected to object to Russian aid to Syria and Iran, two of Israel’s staunchest enemies.
