Wurz pleased with Imola showing

Test driver Alex Wurz believes he justified McLaren's faith him in the San Marino Grand Prix.

Austrian Wurz was drafted in as a replacement for the injured Juan Pablo Montoya, taking over that role from Pedro de la Rosa.

The Spaniard had been preferred to Wurz in Bahrain, where he finished fifth, due to difficulties fitting the lanky Austrian into McLaren's new car.

McLaren put official reserve driver Wurz in the car at Imola and he performed well to take fourth place and valuable points for the constructors 'championship.

Wurz, whose previous race was for Benetton in 2000, was delighted with his effort.

He said: "I wanted to score as many points as possible for the team and I was pleased with fourth place.

"My other goal was not to make any mistakes, because any small mistake or misjudgement is fatal with the current sporting regulations, so the plan was to work through the race weekend step by step.

"It was a super weekend for me. Opportunities like that one don't come around often, and like for many other drivers out there, it was my dream to race for McLaren-Mercedes and San Marino was that long-hoped-for weekend."
