Ahern to meet Spanish PM
28/04/2005 - 08:40:58Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is due to travel to Madrid this morning for talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Manuel Zapatero.
The two men are due to discuss the success of the Spain's referendum on the EU Constitution and the referendum set to take place in Ireland within the next 18 months, as well as the possibility that the French electorate may reject the document.
They are also due to discuss proposed budgetary changes that will see Ireland becoming a contributor rather than a recipient of EU funds.
Mr Ahern is expected to seek Spanish support for demands that EU funds in the areas of agriculture and scientific research continue to be given to be Ireland.
The Taoiseach is also due to lay a wreath at a memorial for the victims of the Madrid train bombings in March 2004.
