Burns backing McLeish to stay put

Former Celtic manager Tommy Burns has urged Rangers’ owner David Murray to keep faith with Alex McLeish.

There were renewed calls for the head of Ibrox boss McLeish after the Light Blues’ Old Firm defeat at the weekend all but handed the Parkhead men the Bank of Scotland Premier League title.

The side went down 2-1 to Celtic on Sunday to leave the Hoops five points clear at the top with only four games to go.

Burns, who was replaced by Wim Jansen at Celtic Park in 1997 after failing to break the stranglehold of Walter Smith’s nine-in-a-row Rangers side, knows all too well the pressures of being a losing Old Firm manager.

However, Burns, now the Parkhead youth supreme and also, ironically, assistant to Smith with the Scotland national side, called for Murray to ignore McLeish’s growing army of critics.

He said: “It’s people above Alex who will need to hold their nerve because supporters on the wrong side of the Old Firm domination, being supporters, will look for change.

“And there’s only one man who drives the bus at Ibrox and that’s David Murray.”
