Darren Ambrose took maximum advantage of Tim Howard’s 26th-minute blunder to leave Newcastle on the brink of their first Old Trafford win since 1972.
After latching on to Howard’s poor clearance 25 yards out, Ambrose burst through a static United defence and beat the American with an excellent finish.
Trying to avoid a third successive Premiership defeat, United huffed and puffed without really testing Shay Given – and they also lost Gabriel Heinze with a serious-looking ankle injury seven minutes before the break.
