Dubs win Leinster U21 title

24/04/2005 - 15:21:45
Kildare 0-4 Dublin 0-10
Man-of-the-match Bernard Brogan kicked the clinching point as 14-man Dublin claimed their third Leinster Under-21 football title in four years - beating Kildare 0-13 to 0-11 at Croke Park.

The Dubs lost out by a point to the same opposition in last year's replay, but today Paddy Canning's side were not to be outdone thanks to a fine scoring display in the first half.

The opening half-hour saw Clontarf marksman Kevin Leahy ease his side to a 0-10 to 0-04 interval lead, as he chipped in with three points. Moore (0-2), Mark Davoren (0-2), Brogan, captain Bryan Cullen and Dabhach Dineen also found their range.

Champions Kildare were off the pace early on but a blitz of three late scores from Padraig O'Neill and substitute duo Tomas O'Connor and Philly Doyle saw them keep in touch.

Backed by the breeze, Padraig Nolan's side cut Dublin's lead to 0-11 to 0-8 by the 42nd-minute with Michael Foley and Tommy O'Neill scoring consecutive overs.

Leahy claimed his fifth point four minutes later but the controversial 52nd-minute sending off of Dublin full-back Willie Lowry saw Canning's men wobble over the finishing line.

Lowry harshly walked for his involvement in a five-man scuffle. Kildare then built on their man advantage with a brace of Michael Conway points.

Nonetheless, armed with a 0-12 to 0-11 lead, the Dubs fended off two late goal chances for Ross Glavin and Pierre Ennis to lift the capital's seventh Under-21 crown since 1974.

Brogan left-footed over on 59 minutes to send his side through to an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Ulster winners Down next weekend.

Cork and Galway clash in the other semi in Limerick.
