The appointment of a new chief executive at Aer Lingus is a key step on its road to success, Transport Minister Martin Cullen said today.

The airline announced today that Dermot Mannion, currently president of Group Support Services with Dubai-based Emirates Airline, will take up his position in August.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Cullen said: “Today, Aer Lingus took a key step in its positioning for growth.

“I am delighted that Aer Lingus has secured the skills of Dermot Mannion. He comes to Aer Lingus with a proven track record earned at one of the world’s leading airlines.

“He joins Aer Lingus at an exciting time for growth. I look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership on the future development of our national airline.”

Willie Walsh resigned as CEO of the State airline in January and is to take up a similar position at British Airways in September.

Mr Cullen said that significant progress has been made in recent years in turning Aer Lingus around which was due in no small part to the efforts of the board, management and staff of the company.

“Aer Lingus operates in a volatile and ever-changing environment which requires the company to function as efficiently as possible with maximum flexibility to compete.

“I have no doubt that with the guidance of Dermot Mannion, working together with a committed staff, Aer Lingus will continue to thrive and grow.”

Last week Aer Lingus recorded operating profits of €107m for 2004 – an increase of 29% on the previous year.
