Scot to ref Cork-Drogs clash

21/04/2005 - 17:23:50
History will be made at Turner's Cross tomorrow night as Scottish Football Association referee Brian Winter takes charge of the eircom League Premier Division match between Cork City and Drogheda United.

It will be the first time that a match official from another association has refereed in the eircom League.

In return, eircom League referee Neil Doyle will officiate at the Queen's Park v Elgin City Scottish League match at Hampden Park on April 30.

Similarly, Paul Tuite will referee the Newry City v Lisburn Distillery Irish Premier League match on Saturday afternoon.

IFA referee Ken Ginnett is scheduled to take charge at United Park on May 13 when Drogheda United host Shelbourne.

The exchanges are part of a UEFA-supported reciprocal arrangement between the FAI and other associations and it is hoped to widen the exchange programme to include the Football Association of Wales.

Pat Kelly, Manager FAI Referees Department said "This experience will be of huge benefit to up-and-coming referees, giving them the opportunity to referee clubs from a different Association in unfamiliar surroundings.

"This experience will benefit them greatly if they progress to the FIFA list in future years, and is a further aid to the Association in developing the elite referees panel."
