Gregory McCartan retires from inter-county

21/04/2005 - 07:31:23
Down footballer Gregory McCartan has announced his retirement from the inter-county scene following a long battle with injury.

The midfielder had not played football for club or county since last year due to a groin injury.

Despite taking time off to recuperate, the 33-year-old's attempts at a comeback have ended in failure. The Castlewellan club man was involved in the county's 1994 All-Ireland-winning campaign.

McCartan said: "It hasn't worked out. I am not going back. I am not playing anything and I can't see any future in county football."
