Captain Kenny sings Morrison's praises
Birmingham captain Kenny Cunningham has warned Clinton Morrison’s contribution to the Birmingham team “should not be under-estimated”.
Morrison has expressed his frustration at being unable to hold down a regular place in Blues’ starting line-up since the arrival of Walter Pandiani on loan in January from Deportivo La Coruna.
And his Republic of Ireland team-mate Cunningham believes Morrison would want to transfer the kind of goal-scoring he has been showing for the Republic of Ireland to club level.
But the veteran central defender insisted Morrison is a “big asset” and other aspects of his game help to make up for any perceived shortcomings in that department.
Cunningham said: “I am sure Clinton will tell you that his goals-per-game ratio is up there with the very best in an Ireland jersey.
“Clinton has been great for us and has scored some very important goals for us in this World Cup qualifying campaign.
“Hopefully that will continue – and I’m sure he’d like to translate that kind of goal ratio into his club football.
“However, his overall contribution to the team should not be under-estimated. Maybe he hasn’t been as prolific as one or two people might have thought.
“But the players alongside him in the team realise the contribution that he makes, the workload he gets through.
“Any centre-forward alongside him will tell you they appreciate the type of player Clinton is, prepared to work the channels time and time again, play with his back to goal.”
Ireland captain Cunningham added: “Clinton will miss opportunities but he will pick himself up and go again. He’s not afraid to miss the target.
“That’s the way it is with centre-forwards. You’ve got to keep getting into those goal-scoring positions.
“Clinton is very strong mentally and he’ll keep going and I’m sure he’ll be a big asset as he has been for the previous three years at Birmingham.”
