Berlusconi govt to face vote of confidence

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi will put the survival of his government to a vote of confidence in parliament this week, as he hung on to power today amid the worst political crisis of his four-year tenure.

The premier is scheduled to deliver a speech tomorrow afternoon first in the Senate and then at the lower house of parliament, parliament officials said.

On Thursday, he will face the confidence vote. If he loses the vote, the government must resign.
