Hoops defenders fight for Old Firm derby fitness

Celtic defenders Joos Valgaeren and Ulrik Laursen are facing a race against time to be fit for the crucial Old Firm derby at Ibrox on Sunday.

Former Hibernian man Laursen has not featured since the 3-2 win at Dundee United on March 19 and his replacement, Valgaeren, picked up an ankle knock in the win over Aberdeen at Celtic Park on Saturday.

Manager Martin O’Neill told the club’s official website, www.celticfc.net: “Joos is still pretty sore and it’s touch and go whether he’ll be available to us on Sunday.

“As for Ulrik, he’s currently making good progress but, again, we’d have to wait until nearer the time before making a proper assessment.”

That could mean a start for Stephane Henchoz, who has not started a game since the 2-0 home defeat by Hearts on April 2 at Rangers.

The Hoops are defending a two-point lead in the Bank of Scotland Premier League title race at Ibrox.
