Watchdog considers probe into consultants' salaries

The Government's spending watchdog is reported to have launched an investigation into the salaries and work practices of hospital consultants.

Reports this morning said the investigation by the Comptroller and Auditor General was focusing on whether the contracts held by consultants in the public sector represented value for money.

The reports said consultants' contracts oblige them to work no more than 33 hours-a-week for up to €150,000 a year.
