Opposition call for immigration clarification
Opposition TDs today called for clarification of immigration law as 48 Nigerian nationals continued a five-day hunger strike at a Dublin hostel.
The men came to Ireland to be reunited with their families but they say “house arrest” conditions imposed by the Justice Department mean they can’t travel to see their wives and children.
All the men have applied for residency in Ireland on the basis of having Irish-born children.
The Justice Department today confirmed the men are required to sign on once a day at their Gardiner Street hostel under normal immigration regulations.
Labour Party justice spokesman Joe Costello told a demonstration by the Nigerian men outside Leinster House this afternoon that current immigration laws on residency were “a shambles” and needed to be clarified.
