House price rises slowing down, says index

House prices are rising at their slowest rate in nine years, according to figures published today by permanent TSB.

In its latest house price index, the financial institution said prices increased by just 1% in the first three months of this year, bringing the average cost of a house to almost €257,000.

Commenting on the figures, Permanent-TSB spokesman Niall O'Grady said they backed up indications of a slowdown in house price increases.

He said he expected prices to increase by around 5% this year, which he described as "modest" when compared to the increases seen in recent years.
