FTSE shows early signs of recovery

19/04/2005 - 09:16:08
The London’s market’s losing streak was poised to end today after a resilient session in New York lifted the spirits of UK investors.

With signs of a bottoming out in the recent worldwide slump, the FTSE 100 Index stood 15.1 points higher at 4842.2 in the first hour of business.

The improvement, which followed a 64 point decline for the top flight last night, came after the Dow Jones Industrial Average produced a better-than-expected showing with a modest decline of 16 points.

Energy giants Shell and BP led the recovery – in part helped by a rising oil price – as shares in the two companies rose 3p and 5p to 471p and 528p respectively.
