Tony McCoy did his bit for his old boss Martin Pipe at Plumpton today when he rode a treble to boost the trainer’s chances of retaining his title.

The 17.5-1 three-timer – in the absence of suspended regular pilot Timmy Murphy – edged Pipe further ahead of Paul Nicholls in the trainers’ championship race.

The victories were for Miss Academy, Shower Of Hail and Argent Ou Or.

Pipe is now £31,232 (€45,661) clear of Nicholls with just five days of the season left to run the reigning champion is relishing the battle.

“I am certainly enjoying the challenge – it is great fun, and it brings jump racing on to the front pages, which is good news,” he told At The Races.

“I have won it 14 times and have been fortunate and very lucky, but I have to lose it one day. It won’t be the end of the world when it happens but we have to do our best.”

Pipe is making sure he has his guns primed for the big race at Sandown Park on Saturday, with eight entries in the Betfred Gold Cup to Nicholls’ three.
