Fergie hoping for Ruud scoring run

18/04/2005 - 07:44:48
Alex Ferguson is crossing his fingers Ruud van Nistelrooy will hit the goal trail again following his FA Cup semi-final double against Newcastle.

In eight previous outings since his return from a worrying Achilles injury, the normally prolific Dutchman had failed to find the target and looked badly off the pace.

But Graeme Souness’ hapless Magpies provided the perfect cannon fodder for Van Nistelrooy to rediscover his scoring touch.

And with six games of the Premiership season to play before the mouth-watering May 21 showdown with Arsenal, Ferguson is convinced his striker can substantially increase his current tally of 14 for the campaign.

“Everyone in the dressing room is delighted for him because, as with most strikers, when they are scoring they don’t think they can miss, when they are not, they don’t think they are ever going to get one,” observed Ferguson.

“Hopefully, now Ruud will maintain his scoring form and start to notch on a regular basis. When he does do that he is unstoppable.”
